How Do I Get From the Airport to the Starting Hostel?

Getting from the airport to your hostel is easy, and you do not need to rent a car. Below you’ll find the best public transportation, shuttle and rideshare options for each tour starting city, along with the stop closest to the hostel and the approximate travel time and cost.

San Francisco

Best option: BART train

Take BART directly from San Francisco International Airport to Powell Street Station in downtown San Francisco. From Powell Street, the hostel is only a few blocks away.

  • Travel time: approximately 30 minutes
  • Trains generally operate until midnight
  • Pay by tapping a contactless credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay at the fare gate
  • Follow airport signs for BART; the station is in the International Terminal
  • Uber and Lyft are also available but are usually considerably more expensive

Easiest option: Uber or Lyft

For travelers carrying luggage, Uber or Lyft is usually the simplest way to reach the hostel in Santa Monica. Travel time and price vary considerably depending on Los Angeles traffic. If several travelers arrive together, sharing a ride may also be economical.

Cheapest option: Big Blue Bus

Take the free airport shuttle from your terminal to the LAX/Metro Transit Center, then take Big Blue Bus Route 3 toward Santa Monica. Get off near downtown Santa Monica and walk the remaining few blocks to the hostel.

  • Allow approximately 60–90 minutes
  • Bus fare is only a few dollars
  • Pay using a TAP card, the TAP app or an accepted contactless payment method
  • Check Google Maps when you arrive for the best departure and closest stop

Best option: TRAX Green Line

The TRAX Green Line connects Salt Lake City International Airport directly with downtown Salt Lake City. Board the train at the airport and get off at the downtown station closest to your hotel or hostel.

  • Fare: approximately $2.50
  • Purchase a ticket from the station ticket machine or through the Transit app
  • Uber and Lyft are also available and may be easier if you arrive late or have a lot of luggage
